A Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) is relatively easy to obtain from a Thai Embassy/Consulate, especially in your home country.

A Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) obtained only from a Thai Embassy/Consulate in your country of residence is valid for 6 months and allows multiple entries during that time.

For specific requirements and fees, you should contact the Thai Embassy or Consulate where you plan to obtain the visa (each will have their own requirements). The category shown on the Visa will be “TR.”

In several countries, Thailand has Honorary Consuls who are citizens of that country. They have the authority to issue SETVs. The ThaiEmbassy.org website has a listing of Thai Embassies and Consulates with a link to their website if one is available.

What do I need to apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa?

You will need the documents required by the Thai Embassy or Consulate if they do not use the eVisa application. Visa applicants in many countries have to apply online for the eVisa. In order to access online visa application, please go to https://thaievisa.go.th/Home.

Biodata page of Passport or Travel Document
Photograph taken within the last six months
Document indicating current location
Travel booking confirmation
Proof of accommodation in Thailand, e.g. Accommodation bookings, invitation letters from family/friends in Thailand

How long do I have to enter Thailand, how long may I stay, and can it be extended?

Single Entry Tourist Visas are usually valid for entry for 3 months from date of issue. Upon entry within that 3 month period, the holder will be permitted to stay for 60 days (includes the day of arrival). For example, if you arrive the day before the Visa expires, you will still receive a 60 day permission to stay. The Immigration Officer will stamp "used" on the Visa.

A one time application for an extension of 30 days can be made at a Thai Immigration Office. This can be done before the admitted until date shown on the entry stamp as the 30 days are added to the initial period. The fee is 1,900 baht.

In the past, visas were a sticker which the applicant placed in his or her passport. But this system has been replaced by a new e-visa which is sent to applicants in a detailed email prior to flying to Thailand.

This email should be printed out and retained to show airlines at time of departure and/or to Immigration upon arrival in Thailand. A copy is also required by the immigration bureau if and when a foreigner applies for an extension of stay.

Multiple Entry Tourist Visa

What do I need to apply for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa?

You will need the following:

Passport which has at least 6 months validity and sufficient blank pages (usually at least two pages is required).
Completed Application for Visa – for Type of Visa, select Tourist from the listing and enter "M" or write "Multiple" in the space for number of entries.
Photograph (2 are usually required) – Taken within the last 6 months, front view, and 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. Click here for guidelines.

Most will have the following or similar requirements – this may differ somewhat and not be inclusive of all documents required – so check the website for the Embassy/Consulate where you plan to apply. The following list is from the Thai Embassy in Washington DC and is provided as an example – for tickets, bank statements, confirmations, etc., the name of the applicant must be clearly shown):

A copy of flight confirmation/reservation, showing going from [country] to Thailand and leaving from Thailand.
A copy of bank statement for the last 6 months with a minimum balance of $7,000 (every months).
Hotel reservation confirmation.
A letter proof of employment or proof of full-time student status, or, for self-employed, business license or business registration indicating the applicant’s name.
